Portugal - Walking in the Algarve Central Base
Portugal is not first associated with walking but as it is with most places, when you start exploring, you find some truly beautiful and impressive scenery and walking.
The walking is mainly coastal with massive sea cliffs, wild oceans, delicate flowers, long white beaches, birds of prey, little white washed villages and the smell of a country that is still moving on slow time.
Inland walking is more gentle, with farmland and small woods making up the scenery.
The walks we offer are dynamic in that they can be tailored to suite different types of walkers, short walks, long walks, hilly hard walks or just short informative walks.
We offer a range of walking packages but these are also dynamic and can be tailored to suite the group or individuals needs
Many of our walks start at the base but because of our position, all walk transfers are short (5 - 10minutes).
Trails are graded moderate (B - B/C). They are rarely flat, with both lowland and expansive views. Average duration is seven hours. The emphasis is on discovering and enjoying the natural environment, especially places only accessible on foot.
|Day 1 - Airport shuttle from Faro to the guesthouse. Light buffet lunch is served at 1:30, followed by a short circular walk of the local erea. Take a swim in the refreshing Atlantic ocean or just have a break in the quaint beach bar.
Dinner is served after an afternoon's relaxation and some time to wash off the days travels.
Day 2 - We start from the base. Acclimatise to local conditions on a circular walk to towards the Cabo de San Vicente. Pass through the small fishing town of Sagres.
Cross over from the south coast, to the west coast and then head back inland towards Vila do Bispo... A small village 5km form out base.
The walk is a very good acclimatization walk.. not very steep, excellent views, with some good distance covered. this walk can be shortened or lengthened.
walk time 6-7 hours
Day 3 - West coast walk. This is an impressive scenic walk.. very hilly, spectacular views and small fisherman paths.
Walking starts on the west coast on the beaches of Vila do Vispo. The day is spent traversing long white beaches and climbing big slate cliffs, winding our way along narrow fisherman's paths. The walk is long and demanding but the rewards are some of the most spectacular scenery s in the world.
Time: 7-8 hours.
Day 4 - Inland walk.
The temptation is to keep walking the coast, but to explore the inland, is to understand and visit the way of life in this southern part of Portugal. Farm land, small villages, Cork forests and massive wind turbines are some of the images that come to mind.
This is either a circular walk or if a longer walk is wanted, a linear walk back towards home. Time 4 hours or 7 hours
|Day 5 - Walk the south coast, east towards Lagos.
This is another spectacular day of coastal walking.. The walking is demanding but again rewarding. Take a towel and bather for a dip in the ocean along the way.. This walk came be shortened or lengthened. The normal walk is 7 hours of up and down terrain on small coastal paths.
Day 6 -West coast: The west coast is very dramatic and wild. The walk is another committing one, but again this is a spectacular day. Misty wild black sea cliffs, big surf, circling sea gulls.
Day 7 - A free day to try something new. Kayak a beautiful river estuary, try some climbing, Take a boat trip to the SW most tip of Europe or visit one of the coastal towns for something more cultural.. or we can organize a visit to Monchique for a circular walk on the highest mountain / hill (998m)
Day 8 - End of the adventure for this time. Breakfast, shuttle to Airport and fly home.
